To qualify as an ADI, you'll need to pass the three official qualifying exams
The Theory Test
The first stage assesses your knowledge of driving theory, instructional techniques, and the Highway Code. It includes a multiple-choice test and a hazard perception section. RoadSmart provides all the study materials, online support, and mock tests you’ll need to build your confidence and pass this stage.
Driving Ability Test
This stage tests your personal driving skills to a very high standard. It’s similar to an advanced driving test, requiring precision, awareness, and excellent control. You’ll receive in-car coaching from your RoadSmart trainer to refine your driving technique and prepare for the test.
Instructional Ability Test
The final stage evaluates your ability to teach learners effectively. You’ll be assessed on lesson planning, communication, risk management, and feedback. Our experienced trainers will help you develop your instructional techniques, with the option to gain valuable real-world experience through a trainee (PDI) licence before your final exam.
Your Training Course
Working in partnership with Bright Coaching’s “BPM” (Bright PDI Masterclass) your training is a blended holistic approach to the qualifying process.
“The course has been created to provide Potential Driving Instructors with the most up to date information, guidance, and forward-thinking training on how to prepare for a new career in road safety, navigate the qualification process, and become a brilliant driving instructor.” – Bright Coaching
The objective is to provide you with a comprehensive, training course that will develop not only your basic knowledge and skills, but also deepen your understanding of coaching, the internationally recognised Goals for Driver Education, and the road to zero road deaths.
The RoadSmart & BPM approach is based on Four Pillars – not Three Tests.
Those Four Pillars are:
Pillar One
Foundational
Knowledge
Pillar Two
Advanced
Driver Training
Pillar Three
Becoming
a Coach
Pillar Four
Becoming
an Instructor
- Pillar One
- Pillar Two
- Pillar Three
- Pillar Four
Foundational Knowledge
The first of the four Pillars has been created to provide you with important industry and teaching knowledge, as opposed to sending you off on your own until you pass a Part One test.
Yes, the rules of the road, and legal requirements are important. But more important is your preparation for what will come later in your training and your career. Foundational Knowledge beats monotonous Theory Test app practice – every time.
Advanced Driver Training
The second of the four Pillars is not about cutting out bad habits in your driving. It’s about true roadcraft, higher-level awareness, and planning skills.
It’s about commentary driving, and consideration of the contextual and behavioural issues that affect your decision making every day behind the wheel.
Becoming a Coach
The best driving instructors understand coaching and they use coaching approaches and methods as a framework, or scaffolding, to build everything else on to.
Rather than being “just another tool in the toolbox”, at BPM, coaching is the toolbox, and Pillar Three is where you will develop your understanding of it.
Becoming an Instructor
Instructional skills are what keep everyone – coaches/instructors/learners/the general public – safe.
In Pillar Four, you will learn how to provide clear directions, instructions, and demonstrations; manage interventions when your leaners require support; watch and anticipate the actions your learner is going to take.
